Guide to Radar Detectors

Radar Detector : What is it?

RadarDetectors1

Radar detectors are electronic devices used for determining if the motorist's speed is being monitored by radar guns or laser monitoring units. They are commonly used by speeders on the road to avoid being caught by the police for exceeding speed limits. They are usually mounted on the windshield or the dashboard of a car to better detect the radio waves or laser beams.

Kinds of Radar Detectors include the following:

Corded radar detectors

  • Corded radar detectors are mounted on the windshield using suction cups.
  • They are plugged into the cigarette lighter or the fuse box.
  • They are very easy to install and can be used in many vehicles.
  • They can detect all bands, including the newly developed POP radar by MPH industries that cannot be identified by standard Cordless models.
  • Unlike Cordless models, they do not require batteries to run.

Cordless radar detectors

  • Cordless radar detectors do not use the car's power to run; they use batteries instead.
  • To conserve battery life, they are usually designed to automatically turn on and off in milliseconds.
  • They are compact, lightweight, and portable.
  • However, their range and sensitivity are approximately 30% less than those of Corded models.
  • Also, most models do not have the ability to identify POP radar that transmits signals in 67 milliseconds.
  • They require frequent battery replacements depending on how often they are used.

Remote Mounted radar detectors

  • Remote Mounted radar detectors are designed for concealment from law enforcers and thieves.
  • Because they are barely noticeable, they are ideal for places where radar detectors are illegal.
  • Most models feature a radar antenna that can be mounted behind the grill, laser antennae, a display module, and a controller device.
  • Some models have active laser jammers that jam speed monitors that use laser instead of radar.
  • They are more expensive than the other types of radar detectors.
  • They require professional installation.

Choosing Radar Detectors (Buying Tips)

Sensitivity and range: Choose a radar detector with a high sensitivity and a long range to allow you to slow down before being detected by a monitoring unit. The farther away your device can detect laser or radar guns, the easier and quicker for you to slow down and avoid getting a speeding ticket.

Noise filter:
Look for a radar detector that can filter trigger sounds and other noises from actual radar guns. Make sure it features a city or highway mode to limit false alarms.

Mute feature:
Choose a radar detector with a manual or an automatic mute feature that keeps audio alarms down during extended radar encounters.
