Radio Scanner : What is it?
Radio scanners are radio receivers designed to automatically scan and tune two or more frequencies. They usually cover non-broadcast radio bands with a frequency of 30 MHz to 950 MHz in the FM band. Some radio scanners can cover a greater radio spectrum using another type of modulation. They have memory banks where chosen frequencies are saved for later monitoring. The manufacture and use of radio scanners designed for listening in to cell phone conversations are banned in the US and other countries. The Federal Communications Commission does not certify these types of radio scanners; hence, they cannot be sold to the public. |

Kinds of Radio Scanners include the following:
Base radio scanners Base radio scanners are designed for desk or floor use. They are heavy and stable. They can be controlled and programmed by computers. Most models can have 10 banks and track and receive more than 1,000 channels. Most base radio scanners have alphanumeric character display screens. They are available with monitors in trunked or mixed models. Handheld radio scanners Handheld radio scanners offer excellent portability and convenience in handling. They can be carried anywhere. Most models feature advanced dynamic memory systems that can store over 5,000 memory channels. They can store more than 16,000 ID codes in one working channel. Handheld radio scanners are available with monitors in trunked or mixed models. They allow various city services to use and share the same scanner frequency sets.

Channels: Good radio scanners have many channels for monitor as many systems and agencies as possible. A multiple-channel scanner does away with constant reprogramming every time there is a need to track and monitor new agencies. Scan and search speed: The radio scanner should have a fast scan and search speed--about 25 to 50 channels per second—especially if it has many channels to browse. This feature is ideal for scanning multiple channels at once and for searching through wide radio bands. |
