Record player needles, also called styli, are used to read, play, and record music from vinyl records. They are attached to a record player cartridge and tilted down to touch the disc as it turns. Needles have elliptical or conical tips that read the groove patterns on the disc and convert them into audible sound.
Tip size: Choose a record player needle that matches the playing speed of your records. Choose a 1-mil (.001 inch) tip for speeds of 16, 33, and 45 rpm, and a 3-mil tip for 78-rpm records.
Tip hardness: Make sure your needle’s tip will not scratch or damage your records. Look for one with an elliptical tip for general playback, and a conical or line-contact tip for creating scratching and loop effects.
