Separate-video (S-video) cables, also called Y/C (luminance/chrominance) cables, transmit video signals from DVD players, digital video recorders, gaming consoles and other similar electronic devices to televisions into two different signals: one for brightness (luminance) and one for color (chrominance). Their round plugs or sockets are composed of four mini or regular DIN pins each with an assigned function. The pair of GND pins represents ground or floor function, while the pair Y and C pins represents luminance and chrominance.
S-video cables transmit standard definition video with a bandwidth of 480i to 576i resolution. They produce video quality far better than those by composite video cables, as they transmit signals in a single line. The quality is especially noticeable when the video signals are transmitted to televisions that display separate signals for chrominance (C) and luminance (Y).
Compatibility: Before purchasing an S-video cable, make sure your electronic audio and video device is equipped with an S-video output for successfully sending out video signals to a device with an S-video input jack.
Connectors: Choose an S-video cable with gold-plated connectors that resist corrosion. Also, look for one covered with a PVC protective jacket to prevent fire from spreading in case of accidents.
Length: If the electronic devices you want to connect are not very far from each other, choose a six- to 10-foot cable length. For greater distances, look for a 20- to 50-foot long S-video cable. You can have its length customized if there is a need to.
