Guide to Satellite Cell Phones

Satellite Cell Phone : What is it?

Satellite Cell Phones

A satellite cell phone is a hybrid device that can communicate with both cellular networks and orbiting communications satellites.  Depending on the architecture of the system or the system provider, it can be used anywhere in the world to call any place at any time. It provides seamless and uninterrupted communication.

A satellite cell phone uses a technology that combines the capabilities of cellular technology (used for local or urban communications) and satellite technology (used for more remote communications). The satellite cell phone technology in the earlier days did not work as well as the one used today because of its high cost and bulky designs. It was only used by a select group of people who traveled the world frequently especially in remote places like the African or Asian safaris. It also communicated in a “line-of-sight” manner—it only worked if there was a clear view of the sky. It was unable to work indoors and in places where tall, overhead obstructions such as buildings, trees, and mountains abound.

Kinds of Satellite Cell Phones include the following:

LEO

  • This type of satellite cell phone uses LEO or a low earth orbit satellites to provide worldwide wireless technology with no gaps.
  • The satellites orbit the earth at a high speed and low altitude, with an orbital time of 70 to 90 minutes and an altitude of 400 to 700 miles.
  • They make complete orbits and cover every area with at least one satellite at all times.

Geostationary services

  • This type of satellite cellphone uses satellites in geostationary orbit.
  • It can maintain near continuous global coverage with only three or four satellites, reducing launch costs.
  • It requires a large, advanced antenna because the satellites are very far away from the earth.
