Satellite receivers, also called voting receivers, pick up satellite signals and direct them to satellite televisions and radios. They allow users to choose between channels, much like a channel converter for cable TV. A satellite entertainment system has at least two receivers, connected to a device called a voting selector. The voting selector chooses the receiver with the strongest signal, which it then decodes into sound and video.
Kinds of Satellite Receivers include the following:
Home-use satellite receivers
Home-use satellite receivers are designed for home satellite systems. They can also receive signals from radio and TV remote controls. Some models also accept high-definition television (HDTV) signals.
Digital satellite receivers
Digital satellite receivers have computer chips that process signals into images and sounds. They usually have channel memory and storage features, which allow viewers to capture images or clips from the TV onto removable drives. They work with HDTV and digital TV signals, as well newer formats such as MPEG and mp3.
Stereo satellite receivers
Stereo satellite receivers are designed for audio processing, although they also work with video. Most models are compatible with newer sound formats, such as Dolby Digital and surround sound. They usually have sound filters, equalizers, and sound adjustment knobs.
Descrambler: Choose a satellite receiver with an embedded descrambler to allow you to view encrypted channels. This will make a wide range of channels available aside from the free-to-air (FTA) ones. Look for one with a conditional access module (CAM) to decode digital signals.
Digital/analog converter: Choose a satellite receiver with a converter feature that allows it to receive both digital and analog channels. Look for one with an automatic focus for consistent image quality in both formats.
