Slide Projector : What is it?
| Slide projectors display images from small photographic slides onto projection screens or surfaces. They are made up of a light source, a slide holder, a condensing lens, and a focusing lens. The slide holder is placed between the light bulb and the condensing lens, so that the light passes through the slide and is enlarged by the lens. The enlarged image is then directed to the focusing lens, which projects it onto the screen. Slide projectors have largely been replaced by digital and LCD projectors, but they are still favored for their low cost and maintenance compared to newer technologies. |

Kinds of Slide Projectors include the following: |
Carousel slide projectors Carousel slide projectors have circular trays consisting of 20 to 140 slide holders. The tray is rotated by a stepper motor, and a reciprocating system drops each slide in front of the light bulb to be projected. The trays may be horizontal or upright, although horizontal trays are more common. Dual slide projectors Dual slide projectors have holder trays made up of an inner and outer ring. Each ring can be advanced and loaded independently and may also be locked together. They allow two or more slides to be projected simultaneously. Single slide projectors Single slide projectors have one holder slot built into a compact case, which also contains the bulb and lenses. They can project one slide at a time. Each slide has to be removed and loaded manually. They are usually compact and portable, and are often compatible with larger slide formats. Viewer slide projectors Viewer slide projectors display slide images on built-in viewing screens. The holders and projection mechanism are contained in a case behind the screen. They screen can be used for previewing images before projecting onto a bigger screen. Slide Cube projectors Slide Cube projectors have cube-shaped holders where slides are stacked in uniform orientation on top of each other. Each slide is dropped into a circular plate and projected onto a preview screen before enlarging. They may include up to 40 cubes, each holding 36 to 44 slides. Stereo slide projectors Stereo slide projectors can project two images at a time, either separately or from a Single holder. A polarizing lens is located in front of the slides, projecting each one with a different polarization. The resulting image appears three-dimensional and more detailed than a Single slide image. |

Light bulbs: Choose a slide projector with a halogen or LED light bulb to prevent them from burning out. Make sure the bulb will not easily overheat with prolonged use. Look for those with cooling fans to regulate the bulb temperature. Focusing: Choose a slide projector with a simple focusing ring or button that allows you to adjust the image without repositioning the entire projector. Look for one with adjustments for size, sharpness, color, and contrast. |
