Guide to Two-Way Pagers

Two-Way Pager : What is it?

twowaypager1

A two-way pager is an interactive communication device that allows users to send and receive text or voice messages over the Internet through a wireless data network. It is a small device, as small as a pocket calculator, that consists of a keypad for typing in the messages and a display screen where the messages are read out. It can have additional features and capabilities like peer-to-peer Delivery and Read receipts; sending out fax messages; sending and receiving email messages; text to speech messages through a phone; local information requests such as weather reports, translations, and calendar events through LAN and the Internet; and PDA functions such as a word processor, data management, and organizer.

Two-way pagers have evolved from simple paging systems to hybrids of computers and communication devices. Its characteristics are inherited from the cell phone and the portable video game. Although most digital cell phones already have two-way paging capabilities via text or SMS messaging, a two-way pager can be more cost efficient, as it operates using a wireless data network instead of a cellular network and control center.

Despite its hi-tech features, two-way pagers are not without its share of disadvantages. A two-way pager does not operate in real tine. It takes 70 seconds to receive a message compared to the 20-second response time of a GSM cell phone. A two-way pager also cannot transmit and display graphics, or store and play audio files.
