Guide to Video Cables

Video Cable : What is it?

VideoCables1

Video cables are a collection of coaxial cable wiring used for transmitting video signals from a video source to different video outputs. They are composed of a dielectric, a conductor, a connector, a shield, and an outer jacket. Transmitting video signals to televisions, laptops, or monitors using video cables allow better contrast ratio, few distortions, and increased color quality. They come in composite, S-video, component, portable projector, RGBHV, VGA, and DVI types.

Kinds of Video Cables include the following:

Composite video cables

  • Composite video cables are the most common cables used for transmitting complete video signals to stereo and VCRs using only one cable.
  • They are color-coded in yellow for video, red for right audio channel, and white for left audio channel.
  • Because they only provide single video signal transmissions, they do not produce excellent video quality.

S-video cables

  • S-video cables are also called SVHS and Y/C cables.
  • They transmit video signals into two different signals.
  • They have two pairs of pins that divide video signals in Chrominance (C) and Luminance (Y) levels.Because they provide dual video signal splitting, they produce improved video quality compared to composite video cables.

Component video cables

  • Component video cables transmit video signals into three different signals.
  • The tips of their cables and jacks are RGB color-coded in red, blue, and green.
  • Because they provide multiple signal splitting, they produce improved video quality compared to composite and S-video cables.

Portable projector video cables

  • Portable projector video cables are used for portable projectors used with a computer or a laptop.
  • They normally come with 15-pin VGA connectors that resemble component video cables.

RGBHV video cable

  • RGBHV video cable look like composite video cables, but they divide video signals into five components.
  • They are composed of three to five RGB cables that divide video into its blue, green, and red colors.
  • They are ideal for HDTV decoders.

VGA video cables

  • VGA video cables are used for computer monitors.
  • They are made up of 15 pins and three rows of male-to-male connectors (cableshavings).
  • They are used for projecting video signals from computers to monitors or to projectors.

DVI video cables

  • DVI video cables look like the larger versions of VGA video cables.
  • Also called Digital Video Interface cables, they digitally link video sources to the corresponding video output device.

Choosing Video Cables (Buying Tips)

Protective covering: Choose a video cable with a nylon or PVC protective jacket for extra cable flexibility and resistance to fire and rust.

Length: Choose a video cable long enough to connect your video source to your television or monitor. It usually runs from three to over 100 feet long. It can also be customized for use in greater distances.
