Guide to Video Phones

Video Phone : What is it?

VideoPhones1

Video phones transmit both audio and video signals, allowing users to view the person at the other end during a conversation. They look like regular telephone sets, but with a viewing screen attached to the cradle. A small camera is usually built into the screen for capturing and sending video as well. Depending on the provider, they can also support videoconferencing, where three or more parties communicate via video call. Video phones usually require a paid subscription or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capability to send and receive videos.

Kinds of Video Phones include the following:

Satellite video phones

  • Satellite video phones send and receive signals from communications satellites positioned above the earth.
  • They can communicate to and from remote locations, as long as there is a clear path from the antenna to the satellite.
  • They have almost no interference and are unaffected by harsh weather conditions.

Wireless video phones

  • Wireless video phones consist of a separate handset and viewer with a microphone, camera, and color screen.
  • The phone and viewer communicate through radio frequency (RF) or Bluetooth.
  • They usually compress videos before sending for faster transmission.

Standalone video phones

  • Wired video phones send and receive signals through traditional telephone lines.
  • They usually have LCD screens with cameras mounted on top.

TV-based video phones

  • TV-based video phones display received videos and images on TV screens.
  • They look like cable boxes and are placed on top of the TV set.

Software-based video phones

  • Software-based video phones are computer programs containing all the functions of hardware phones.
  • They transmit data through the Internet or a VoIP connection.

Choosing Video Phones (Buying Tips)

Compression: Choose a video phone that transmits videos in compressed MPEG-4 format to reduce traffic and get better reception. Make sure the format is supported by the other party’s video phone as well.

Security:
Make sure the video phone has an encryption function to prevent your signals from being captured by other devices during transfer. Wireless models are especially prone to interception. If you want a wireless video phone, look for one that operates at a less crowded frequency such as 5.8 GHz.
