Volume controls regulate the intensity of the sound coming from a speaker or an amplifier. They come in different types – there are wall mounts or stand-alone models for indoor or outdoor use.
Types Of Volume Controls
Kinds of volume controls include the following:
Indoor volume controls
An indoor volume control is ideal for use inside houses, buildings, and other enclosed structures. A typical unit usually has up to 10 volume adjustments and step attenuations that can lower the volume in negative three to negative six decibel steps. Most indoor volume controls have average input of 50 watts and 8-ohm speaker impedance. They usually have very shallow mounting depth ideal for indoor walls. Some heavy-duty indoor volume controls can regulate up to four speakers.
Outdoor volume controls
An outdoor volume control usually has weatherproof housing. It can help balance amplifier volume even if the unit is indoors, and can be used with a powerful amplifier of up to 75 watts for each channel. Most models have a maximum input of 60 watts and an 8-ohm speaker impedance. They have frequency responses of 35 Hz to 20 kHz and average attenuation of 34dB.
Choosing Volume Controls (Buying Tips)
Attenuation. If you have a cramped indoor space, choose a volume control with a high attenuation level of up to 42 decibels. The higher the attenuation, the more you can lower the sound of your audio system. Also, look for a volume control with a step-by-step attenuation control that allows you to lower down the volume in standard increments.
Setting. Get an outdoor volume control if you frequently hold pool or patio parties. Make sure it has been treated to withstand different outdoor weather conditions.
