Artificial Nail : What is it?
| Artificial nails, also called false nails, are worn as extensions or decorative coatings over natural nails. They are applied over the nail using special water-resistant glue, and may be applied at home or professionally done at the salon. They are often painted for decoration or pierced to accommodate nail rings. They are preferred by most women over growing natural nails because they are less brittle and require less maintenance. Some women also use them to get rid of nail-biting habits. |

Kinds of Artificial Nails include the following: |
Sculptured nails
- Sculptured nails are made of gel, acrylic, or fiberglass overlays molded over a piece of foil or metal.
- Some varieties use plastic nail tips and silk coatings applied on the entire nail.
- The base is gradually filled in over several sessions as the natural nail grows out, filing off the artificial tip and leaving only the overlay.
Acrylic nails
- Acrylic nails are the most durable type of artificial nail, but they are more difficult to apply and require more maintenance.
- They tend to look thick and artificial when not properly applied, and usually have to be filled in regularly to accommodate the growth of natural nails.
- They are prone to mildew buildup, especially when the nail is exposed to rough conditions.
Nail wraps
- Nail wraps are made of silk, linen, or fiberglass cloth custom-cut and glued to hard nail plates.
- They are applied directly over the natural nail and are used to strengthen or extend the nail tips.
- Silk wraps look the most natural but lack durability, while linen wraps appear too thick.
- Fiberglass is the most preferred material because they combine the look of silk and the strength of linen.
Gel nails
- Gel nails are made of Mylar, a polyester-based film, molded into nail form.
- They are sculpted over the nail and placed under an ultraviolet light to allow it to set.
- They are more permanent than other artificial nails and require less frequent fill-ins.

Length: Choose a nail length that you can easily maintain. Artificial nails grow along with the natural nail, so make sure the nails will not grow too long in between fills. Choose shorter nails if you do a lot of manual work because longer nails are more easily damaged.
Durability: Look for artificial nails made of hard, durable materials. Make sure they can withstand frequent exposure to heat, moisture, and impact. Look for those with reinforced tips if you plan to grow them past your fingertips. |
