Canes, also called walking sticks, provide support to people with impaired mobility and balance. They are made up of long shafts with a curved or bent top, which serves as the handle. They work by providing an extra base of support, much like an additional leg. The user typically holds the cane downward and rests his weight on the handle. Canes are traditionally made of wood, but modern canes can also be made of metal or plastic.
Functional Grip Canes have straight handles set perpendicularly to the shaft. They usually have ergonomic grips with finger grooves and rubber covers. They allow better control of the shaft and are ideal for moderate balance assistance.
Quad Canes have a rectangular base with four corner legs below the shaft. They offer more stability and balance than C and Functional Grip Canes. They are commonly used by patients with hemiplegia, a condition where one or both of the limbs is paralyzed.
Hemiwalkers
Hemiwalkers have four legs joined at the two sides and connected by a wide horizontal handle. They usually fold up into a flat sheet for easy storage and transport. They provide the most support and are ideal for patients with severe hemiplegia.
Grip: Choose a cane with a firm, comfortable grip. Make sure the handle fits properly into your hand and does not slide or tilt. Look for one with rubber grips or finger grooves for a more comfortable fit.
Base: Make sure your cane has an even, sturdy base. C Canes and Functional Grip Canes should have perfectly flat ends to keep them upright. Make sure all the legs on Quad Canes and hemiwalkers lie flat on the floor to prevent wobbling.
