Guide to Commercial Tanning Beds

Commercial Tanning Bed : What is it?

Commercialtanningbeds1

Commercial tanning beds create tans by exposing the skin to ultraviolet (UV) light. They are lined with 16 to 24 UV lamps that project light evenly onto the skin, creating the same effect as natural sun tanning. They are designed for home use and usually have lower-intensity lamps compared to salon tanning beds. Users apply tanning lotion or tanning oil to speed up the tanning process and keep the UV rays from drying out the skin. Tanning sessions last from five to 45 minutes, and results usually last three to ten days.

Kinds of Commercial Tanning Beds include the following:

Horizontal tanning beds

  • Horizontal tanning beds consist of a platform and a curved lid fitted with UV lamps.
  • The user lies down on the platform and closes the lid to let the skin absorb the UV rays.
  • They work on one side of the body at a time, so the user has to turn halfway through the session to get an even tan.

Vertical tanning beds

  • Vertical tanning beds are shaped like cubicles or cylinders with a full-length door.
  • The lamps are located throughout the walls, projecting light toward the center of the booth.
  • The user stands in the middle and receives UV light from all sides, creating an even tan without having to turn throughout the session.

High-pressure tanning beds

  • High-pressure tanning beds emit more UVA light and less UVB, reducing the risk of skin cancer and other skin disorders.
  • They also tan faster because the UV rays reach only the upper layers of the skin.
  • They are relatively rare and are much more expensive than regular tanning beds.

Choosing Commercial Tanning Beds (Buying Tips)

Construction: Make sure your commercial tanning bed is tightly sealed to keep the UV rays from bouncing off. Look for one with highly reflective walls to minimize UV wastage.

Wattage: Choose a commercial tanning bed with a low wattage to regulate UV exposure. Home tanning lamps should be about 100 watts to achieve visible results. Use tanning oils to enhance absorption of low-watt lamps.

Safety information

UV rays have been proven to cause various skin disorders, including skin cancer. This risk is present in all tanning beds, and the World Health Organization (WHO) discourages their use for cosmetic purposes. Use your tanning bed in moderation and be sure to follow safety regulations.

Use only the recommended exposure time in your tanning bed. Ask your dermatologist to prescribe an ideal frequency and intensity for your skin type.

Wear prescribed goggles to prevent arc eye, a painful condition caused by direct and prolonged exposure to UV light

Do not tan indoors and outdoors on the same day, because this can cause overexposure.
Choose a tanning bed with a safety feature that turns off the lamps after a preset time.

If you have fair or sensitive skin, use tanning oils and sunscreens between sessions to protect your skin from sunlight.
