Electric Wheelchair : What is it?

ElectricWheelchairs1

An electric wheelchair is an electronically propelled mobility device.  It allows the disabled to move in any direction from from one place to another using a joystick. It uses a motor to move, which is powered by rechargeable lead acid batteries. It is a quiet machine that  requires more maintenance than a manual wheelchair. It can be used indoors and outdoors.

Kinds of Electric Wheelchairs include the following:

Rear-wheel drive electric wheelchair

  • A rear-wheel drive electric wheelchair is one of the most stable electric wheelchairs available.
  • It has a top speed of approximately six miles per hour.
  • Whenever it is used for going up steep hills, it leans back on its anti-tip tubes to prevent it from tipping backwards.
  • It has the highest turning radius, 33 inches at least, among all the other electric wheelchair types.
Front-wheel drive electric wheelchair

  • A front-wheel drive electric wheelchair is made with the drive wheels in front.
  • It is is stable even in uneven terrain whether downhill, uphill, or flat.
  • It can climb over small obstacles.
  • Its driving mechanism is similar to a forklift.
  • It has an overall speed of five to five-and-a-half miles per hour, which is slower than the others because it tends to fish tail on higher speeds.
  • It can have a turning radius of 25 to 28 inches depending on the manufacturer.

Mid-wheel drive electric wheelchair

  • A mid-wheel drive electric wheelchair is made with the drive wheels under the seat.
  • The distribution of the wheelchair is even in front and at the back.
  • It has a turning radius of 24 to 26 inches, making it maneuverable in small spaces.
  • It has an overall speed of approximately five-and-a-half miles per hour.
  • It is not ideal for uneven terrain because the drive wheels can be suspended until they have no contact with the ground, causing the front and casters whees to be stuck.
