Eye Drop : What is it?

EyeDrops1

Eye drops are saline solutions contained in special bottles used as vectors for administering eye medication. They have narrow openings called droppers designed to direct the saline solution right into the eyes. Eye drops are available in different formulations depending on the eye condition to be treated.

Kinds of Eye Drops include the following:

Eye drops for dry eye treatment

Eye drops for dry eye treatment are formulated to replicate natural tears and provide instant dry eye relief. Also called artificial tears, they hydrate and protect the eyes the natural way.  They generally consist of water, electrolytes, carbohydrates, lipids, and a variety of proteins functioning as enzymes such as lysozome, lactoferrin, and IgA antibodies.   Artificial tears, however, cannot duplicate the complex composition of natural tears.

Eye drops for allergy treatment

Eye drops for allergy treatment are formulated to relieve minor eye discomforts due to allergy such as itching, redness, strain, blurriness, and fatigue. They can only be used for treating slight irritations that do not last for an extended period. They can be bought over the counter.

Special medication eye drops

Special medication eye drops are formulated for special conditions involving major eye treatments such as glaucoma, cataract, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Ingredients may include steroids (e.g. dexamethasone), antihistamines, beta-receptor blockers, sympathomimetics, parasympatholytics (e.g. tropicamide or atropine), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), parasympathomimetics (e.g. pilocarpine), prostaglandins, and topical anesthetics.
