Gel nails are artificial nails made from a sticky, transparent gel set over a foil or plastic mold. They are preferred by most women because of their flexibility, which makes them less prone to cracks and chips than acrylic or fiberglass nails. They are made by applying the gel over the mold and allowing it to harden under light or heat. Gel nails were traditionally made from dental porcelain gel powder, but most salons now use Mylar, a thin polyester film.
Hardness: Choose a gel nail with a hard, durable finish to prevent cracks and scratches. Softer gels tend to shrink and crease over time. Make sure the nail will not soften or get brittle with heat or pressure.
Consistency: Choose a thick, smooth gel nail that clings easily to your natural nail. Make sure there are no bubbles in the liquid gel, because this will make the finished nail weak and porous.
