Guide to Washable Menstrual Pads
Regarded as a greener reusable alternative to disposable sanity pads and tampons, washable menstrual pads are regaining popularity as the more cost effective and environmentally friendly way to manage vaginal discharges, particularly menstrual flow and post-birth bleeding. They are available commercially but can also be made by hand from old fabrics, especially cotton and hemp. Aside from washable sanitary pads, more women are now also using menstrual cups .
Washable menstrual pads do not use synthetic materials used in disposable varieties, some of which are actually carcinogenic (like dioxin). They also don’t go to landfills. The myth that they are unsanitary or inconvenient is unfounded, with supporters saying that these cloths are used, washed properly, dried, and reused just like clean underwear.
