Hair Extension : What is it?
| Hair extensions are hair systems integrated to existing hair to give it added volume, length, or more life. Made of synthetic hair, horsehair, or human hair, they are attached to the head or hair using various methods. They can be attached individually or in wefts. Individual strand extensions involve taking small amounts of hair extensions, about 20 to 50 strands, and applying them to small sections of real hair by heat fusion, weaving, gluing, clamping with metal rods, or by using polymers and waxes. They usually last only a few months before they are taken out and redone. Wefts, on the other hand, are curtains of hairs attached together at the top of the head. They can hand- or machine-made. Hair extensions can make thin hair appear thicker and short hair appear longer in just minutes. They are also used for highlighting or low-lighting hair without dying it. They are commonly used as alternatives to wigs. They are available in different lengths, textures, colors, and volumes to match different hair specifications. |

Kinds of Hair Extensions include the following: |
Braids, cornrows, twists, and locks
- Braids, cornrows, twists, and locks are hair extensions integrated into the hairstyle using braided attachments.
- They blend seamlessly into the hairstyle, making them hard to detect as extensions.
Weaves
- Weaves are tiny braids that hold hair extensions against the scalp.
- They look like small cornrows with hidden braids.
- They apply tension and uneven weight to natural hair, causing them to break or be pulled out.
- They can be difficult to dry after washing.
Bonding
- Bonding uses latex plugs glued to natural hair.
- It is ideal for short-term use only.
- It is a fast and inexpensive hair extension method.
- However, it is hard to remove. It requires oil and heat to dissolve the latex, which can be messy and time consuming.
- It can cause hair to fall off when not properly removed.
Metal tubing
- Metal tubing uses a metal tube clamped over the real hair where the hair extensions are attached.
- This hair extension method causes hair breakage and adds weight to real hair.
- It is not recommend for those with thin hair.
Heat-shrink tubing
- Heat-shrink tubing does not harm natural hair, but it does not have a strong holding power for long-term wear.
- It can loosen after a few washings, causing extension hair to fall out.
Adhesive-based fusion
- Adhesive-based fusion uses wax-based adhesives to attach wefts of hairs to the scalp.
- Existing natural hair is used to cover up the wefts.
- It comes with an adhesive remover and a special glue for re-applying the extensions when needed.
- It can last for weeks even when washing, but it depends on how oily the hair gets and the weather condition.

Materials used: To blend well with you existing hair, only choose hair extensions made of 100% human hair. Synthetic hair does not blend well to natural hair, and it is easily detectable. If you are a Caucasian, choose hair extensions made of European hair because the strands are finer. If you are Asian or African-American, look for hair extensions made of Asian hair because they are thicker and heavily pigmented.
Professional job: For best results, have a professional do your hair extensions for you.
