Holter Monitor : What is it?
| Holter monitors are used to monitor the heart's electrical activity for a limited period. They consist of three to seven electrodes, which attach to the chest and record electrical signals from the heart. The signals are logged onto a recorder attached to the user's belt. Most models record the data at slow speeds on a standard C60 (60 minutes) or C90 (90 minutes) audio cassette. There are also digital monitors that record on a removable flash disk, allowing data to be transferred to computers for further analysis. |

Kinds of Holter Monitors include the following: |
Continuous Holter monitors Continuous Holter monitors record data for continuously for a fixed period. They are usually worn for 24 to 48 hours and record signals in a single stream. They are commonly used for tests and diagnostic procedures. Intermittent Holter monitors Intermittent Holter monitors, also called loop recorders, record in short bursts over several weeks or months. Standard recorders have a 30-day capacity, but these can be extended by using longer tapes or larger flash disks. They are used to take samples of heart activity and analyze them according to the patient's minimum, maximum, and average heart rate. |

Electrodes: Choose a Holter monitor with several electrodes to accurately record heart rates. This is ideal for patients known to have irregular heart rates, because it provides more site samples for a more reliable average. If you have bone or muscle injuries where the electrodes are placed, make sure there are readouts for each electrode to determine whether the injury affects your blood flow. Sensitivity: Choose a highly sensitive Holter monitor to record small differences in heart rate. This is useful for infants and patients under intensive care. Make sure it can distinguish muscle spasms from regular pulse. Place the electrodes over bony areas to reduce pickups from muscle movement. |
