Infrared Sauna : What is it?
| Infrared saunas use far infrared radiation to generate heat. They project heat directly to objects inside the sauna, which warms the user's body without heating the surrounding air. Heat is reflected throughout the enclosure by ceramic heaters and reflectors.
Infrared saunas offer the same benefits as traditional saunas, but without the risk of burns from the heated steam. The heat also penetrates about 1.5 inches into the skin and warms the body tissues, stimulating blood circulation and relaxing sore muscles. Infrared saunas are also recommended for users with respiratory problems, because they can tolerate dry heat better than the moist air in traditional saunas. |

Heater type: Choose an infrared sauna with ceramic heaters to distribute heat more evenly within the enclosure. Look for one with steel reflectors that project heat from behind the heater to keep it from getting absorbed by the walls. Choose a flat or concave heater for large saunas, and a cylindrical one for smaller enclosures.
Construction: Choose an infrared sauna with thick cedar walls. Make sure the wood is smooth and polished to make it less porous. Check the walls for cracks or weak seams that may allow heat to escape. Look for one with glass doors that open outward to keep users from getting trapped inside the room. |
