A manual wheelchair is a chair mounted on wheels used by disabled persons for moving around.  It is propelled forward by another person by pushing it forward by the handles, or by the user himself by spinning the wheels at the sides of the chair forward or backward.  A basic manual wheelchair consists of a frame, a seat, wheels and tires, armrests, and a footrest.

Child/Junior manual wheelchair

  • A child or junior manual wheelchair is designed for children and young adults.
  • It comes in child-oriented styles and colors.
  • It has been adapted to classroom environments allowing it to fit in most social situations.

Specialty manual wheelchair

  • A specialty manual wheelchair is designed for a specific target market or to address the special needs of a particular disability.
  • It can be in the form of a lowered hemi wheelchair propelled using leg strength, a wheelchair propelled with one hand for those who are paralyzed on one side, an oversize wheelchair for the obese, or an aerodynamic, three-wheeled racing wheelchair for those who engage in marathons and racing events.

Institutional/Nursing Home/Depot manual wheelchair


  • An institutional wheelchair is the most affordable type of manual wheelchair.
  • It has a basic design.
  • It is used for transporting patients in hospitals or nursing homes.
  • It is not recommended for everyday use.
