Nail Extension : What is it?

NailExtensions1

Nail extensions add length to natural fingernails to make them look more elegant. They are usually applied to the tips of the nails and sealed with adhesive or heat treatment. They can be designed to resemble natural nails or made in a different shade to create French tips. Most nail extensions are semi-permanent and last several weeks, with occasional fills or treatment.

Kinds of Nail Extensions include the following:

Gel nail extensions

  • Gel nail extensions are made of colored gel molded to fit over the tip of the nail.
  • They are cured onto the natural nails and hardened by exposing to ultraviolet light.
  • They need to be filled every two to three weeks to accommodate nail growth.

Acrylic nail extensions

  • Acrylic nail extensions are made by mixing acrylic powder and liquid into a paste, and brushing it over the nail.
  • They are the most durable type of nail extension, but are difficult to apply and maintain.
  • They offer a natural look and require fills every two to three weeks.

Fiberglass nail extensions

  • Fiberglass nail extensions are made of fiberglass cloth wrapped around a plastic or gel mold.
  • They are much thinner and lighter than acrylic extensions while offering the same durability and strength.
  • Silk or linen may be used in place of fiberglass, although they are not as durable and look less nat

Choosing Nail Extensions (Buying Tips)

Hardness: Choose a nail extension with a hard, durable finish. Make sure the tips are thick and even to prevent cracking and chipping. Choose a more flexible extension, such as gel, if you do a lot of manual work where your nails are subjected to abuse.

Thickness: Choose a thin but heavy-duty nail extension for a more natural look. Look for one that blends smoothly onto the natural nail with no visible seams.
