Guide to Nail Files

Nail File : What is it?

NailFiles1

Nail files are used to smooth and shape the edges of fingernails after trimming with nail clippers. They usually consist of a small handle and a flat stick roughened on one or both sides. Some nail files have pointed edges used to push out dirt from under the nails. Miniature nail files are also added to nail clippers for easier use.

Kinds of Nail Files include the following:

Emery boards

  • Emery boards are made from strips of cardboard covered with textured emery paper.
  • They are less abrasive than metal and glass files, and usually take longer to achieve the right shape end edge detail.
  • Most models are designed for single use, since reusing can transmit disease from one user to another.

Metal nail files

  • Metal nail files consist of small pieces of steel or aluminum coated with corundum or sapphire crystals.
  • They work faster than emery boards, but can be too rough and tend to splinter the fingernails.
  • They can be used on different people, but have to be washed and dried between transfers.

Glass nail files

  • Glass nail files have small peaks molded onto the side to create an abrasive surface.
  • They are finer and gentler on the nails than metal nail files, reducing the risk of chipping and cracking.
  • They are also easier to clean and do not require frequent resharpening.

Choosing Nail Files (Buying Tips)

Maintenance: Choose a nail file that can be cleaned with water and soap. If you are getting a metal file, make sure it is made of stainless steel to prevent rusting. Make sure the filing surface is rigid and will not lose roughness with frequent washing.

Texture: Choose a nail file with a fine, sharp grain. The surface should be sharp enough to chip off protruding bits, but should not cut deeply into the nail and damage the edges. Make sure the texture is consistent throughout the file for a more even finish.
