Guide to Organic Makeup
Organic cosmetics are made from plant extracts and mineral pigments that provide color and natural sun filters. Unlike conventional cosmetics, none of organic makeup products contain any synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, or artificial fragrances. Only makeup labeled “certified organic’ have absolutely no exposure to pesticides. Those labeled only “organic’ may contain pesticides. However, organic makeup is still deemed largely safer than conventional cosmetics because they often don’t contain sodium laurel sulfate, paraben, and hydrosols.
Certification for organic color cosmetics is provided by ECOCERT®, which requires the following:
- Raw materials must not go through any pre-treatment
- Suppliers must pass a review before raw materials are approved
- Manufacturing and packaging facilities must pass a rigorous inspection
- All packaging must be recyclable
