Guide to Perfume Oils

Perfume Oil : What is it?

perfumeoils1

Perfume oils are aromatic compounds that provide scents for perfumes, creams, and other beauty products. They are also applied directly on the body for a longer-lasting fragrance. Some also use them in scented candles and potions for aromatherapy. Perfumes usually contain 22% perfume oils, eau de toilette has 8% to 15%, and eau de cologne has 2% to 5%.

Because they are oil-based, perfume oils hold natural extracts more effectively than water or alcohol-based scents. They are usually applied in small amounts, because they have are highly concentrated and do not dry as fast as colognes and diluted perfumes.

Kinds of Perfume Oils include the following:

Essential oils

  • Essential oils, also called volatile or ethereal oils, are extracted from plant parts like leaves, barks, roots, and flowers.
  • They have extremely high concentrations, so they are usually diluted with carrier oils before applying on the skin.
  • Most varieties are clear, but some extracts may give it a yellow or amber tint.

Fragrance oils

  • Fragrance oils are made from artificial scents diluted with vegetable oils, flavor oils, or carrier oils.
  • They are less concentrated than essential oils and are not suitable for aromatherapy or mixing with other scents.
  • They are often added to alcohol or water compounds to create perfumes and colognes.

Choosing Perfume Oils (Buying Tips)

Texture: Choose a light, thin perfume oil that feels natural on your skin and does not leave an oily or greasy feel. Make sure it is easily absorbed to keep it from mixing with sweat or attracting dirt. Lighter oils also mix more easily with other oils to create unique scents.

Concentration
: Choose a perfume oil with a high concentration and little to no carrier oils. This will allow you to control your own mixes and avoid diluting the primary scents. Pure essential oils usually work best and mix well with most scents.
