Shampoo : What is it?
| Shampoos remove dirt, oil, and other contaminants from the hair. They work by dissolving a protective layer called sebum, where most of the dirt collects. The sebum and dirt are then washed away during rinsing. This process also washes out the hair’s natural moisture, so shampoos usually contain conditioners and moisturizers to prevent drying. Most shampoos are scented and in liquid form. Solid shampoos are also available for special applications, such as treating scalp damage. |

Kinds of Shampoos include the following: |
Dandruff shampoos
Dandruff shampoos are designed to remove dandruff particles from the hair. They contain fungicides that kill dandruff-causing bacteria, and loosen the flakes that have hardened onto the scalp.
Some brands also contain coal tar and salicylate derivatives to prevent infection.
All-natural shampoos
All-natural shampoos contain fully organic or herbal ingredients with little or no chemicals added. They are less drying and damaging to the hair, but may not clean as effectively as chemical shampoos.
Alternative shampoos
Alternative shampoos have no sulfate chemicals added, which reduces hardness and corrosion. They are safer for everyday use, but have to be applied multiple times to effectively remove dirt.
Infant shampoos
Infant shampoos contain mild surfactants to protect the delicate strands of an infant’s hair. They have the same pH level as the eye, which reduces eye irritation. |

Moisturizers: Choose a shampoo that contains moisturizers to replenish the natural oils that get stripped during washing. Look for one with natural conditioners such as egg and chamomile to help maintain shine and moisture.
Formulation: Choose a shampoo with a high pH and low sulfate content. This will help prevent eye and skin irritation and keep the scalp moisturized. Choose a herbal or organic shampoo if you wash on a daily basis to keep from damaging and drying out your hair. |
