Tanning Bed Bulb : What is it?
| Tanning bed bulbs project ultraviolet (UV) light onto the skin to create artificial tans. They are installed on the lids of tanning beds and along the walls of tanning booths. They emit about 95% UVA light, the type of light responsible for tanning, and a small portion of UVB, a harsher light that penetrates the skin. Newer models emit only UVA, but these are rare and more expensive. They are designed after natural sunlight, but in more consistent amounts for a more even tan. |

F71 lamps
- F71 lamps attach to the bed using two prongs on the ends.
- They come in power ratings of 100 to 160 watts.
F72 and F73 lamps
- These tanning lamps have a single black clip on one end.
- They resemble fluorescent lamps and are available in100-watt and 160-watt models.
F59 lamps
- F59 lamps are shorter than other lamps and may have one or two pins.
- They are commonly found in smaller equipment, such as cartridge facial tanners.

Longevity: Choose a tanning bed lamp that lasts about 1,000 hours, but replace them after 700 to 800 hours to ensure full intensity. Look for lower-intensity lamps to prevent them from burning out.
Intensity: Choose a tanning bed lamp with moderate intensity for faster tanning and longer use. If you have fair or sensitive skin, look for UVA-only lamps to prevent burns and irritation.

UV lamps directly expose the skin to UV rays, which have been linked to skin cancer and other skin diseases. Use your tanning bulbs correctly and follow safety instructions from the manufacturer. Take the following safety measures to ensure safe use of your tanning bulbs.
Do not expose your skin to UV lamps for more than 30 minutes. Consult your dermatologist to find out the right exposure time for your skin type.
UV can also cause eye damage, particularly arc-eye, a painful condition caused by overexposure to UV light. Wear goggles during tanning sessions to protect your eyes.
Use tanning oils during tanning and sunscreens in between sessions to prevent skin damage, drying, and burns.
