Guide to Tanning Lotions

Tanning Lotion : What is it?

tanninglotion1

Tanning lotions create artificial tans without exposing the skin to sunlight. They contain natural and synthetic chemicals that react with the skin and induce temporary color changes. The most common ingredient in tanning lotions is DHA, a skin-safe organic compound. Most brands also contain copper, melanin- and L-tyrosine in various levels, depending on the desired shade of the tan. Tea oils and herbal extracts are often included to minimize the harmful effects of the chemicals, as well as add fragrance to enhance the tanning experience.

Kinds of Tanning Lotions include the following:

Accelerators

  • Accelerators stimulate the skin to produce tanning cells.
  • They are commonly used in the morning to prepare the skin for a tanning session.
  • They produce immediately visible results when used in a tanning bed or booth.

Amplifiers

  • Amplifiers create a barrier on the skin to keep UV rays from bouncing off.
  • They increase the skin’s UV absorption and prevent wastage of UV rays.
  • They also leave a moisturizing layer that prevents the chemicals from drying out the skin.

Bronzers

  • Bronzers contain DHA and other temporary dyes that create immediate changes in skin color.
  • They are used to enhance or jumpstart the tanning process in tanning beds.
  • They are usually preceded by exfoliators on the joints to prevent streaking and ensure a smooth, even finish.

Choosing Tanning Lotions (Buying Tips)

Moisturizers: Choose a tanning lotion that contains moisturizers and skin conditioners. This will minimize the harmful effects of UV heat and prevent burns. Look for one that uses natural coolants like aloe vera and menthol.

Drying time:
Choose a tanning lotion that dries quickly and is easily absorbed by the skin. Thick lotions stay on the skin’s surface longer and can feel heavy, especially inside a tanning booth.
