Toothpaste : What is it?
| Toothpaste is a gel or paste used for cleaning the teeth, gums, and tongue to promote good oral hygiene. It also improves the appearance and the health of the teeth. Used together with a toothbrush, it helps remove dental plaque, teeth stains, and bad breath caused by eating of different foods, smoking, and talking or not talking.

User types
Children's toothpaste
- A children's toothpaste is specifically formulated for children seven years and below.
- It contains only about 500 parts per million of fluoride (ppmF) since developing teeth do not need much. Too much fluoride in children’s teeth can cause fluorosis.
- It strengthens developing teeth and prevents tooth decay.
- It should be used at least three times a day, preferably after every meal.
Adult's toothpaste
- An adult's toothpaste is specifically formulated for those older than seven years old.
- It contains approximately 1,000 to 1,450 ppmF that provides enough fluoride protection for developing and permanent teeth.
- It contains mild abrasives such as silica, calcium carbonate, and calcium phosphates that help clean teeth effectively.
- It can be made with other agents that help control tartar, plaque, and gum diseases.
- It usually comes in a mint flavor that freshens breath.
Smoker's toothpaste
- A smoker's toothpaste is specifically formulated for smokers to remove teeth stains caused by smoking.
- It is very abrasive.
- It requires to be vigorously brushed on the teeth to remove the enamel that causes abrasion cavities effectively.

Desensitizing toothpaste
- Desensitizing toothpaste is formulated to fight hypersensitivity of the teeth.
- It blocks tiny channels or openings on the teeth that make them sensitive.
- It usually contains 1450 ppmF.
- Its primary ingredient is strontium salts, a chemical substance similar to calcium.
Whitening toothpaste
- Whitening toothpaste is formulated to help whiten stained teeth.
- It is used for cosmetic and aesthetic purposes.
- It uses a fluoride and enzyme system to help bring back the natural color of teeth.
Gum care toothpaste
- Gum care toothpaste is formulated to prevent gum diseases and promote gum care.
- It usually contains stannous fluoride that helps reduce incidence of gingivitis and other gum diseases.
Tartar control toothpaste
- Tartar control toothpaste is formulated for tartar and plaque prevention.
- It does not actually remove tartar and plaque, but it prevents them from forming above and below the gum line, which can cause various gum diseases.
- Its primary ingredient is sodium pyrophosphate
- It can be formulated to control gingivitis.
