Ceiling Fan : What is it?
| Ceiling fans are useful during warm weather and are more cost-effective than air conditioning units. Standard ceiling fans are composed of: (a) an electric motor protected by a housing; (b) three to six blades made of wood, MDF, metal, or plastic; (c) a mounting system; and (d) a series of controls. Most models are now also remote-controlled. |

Kinds of Ceiling fans include the following: |
Household-style Ceiling Fans
Typical Household-style Ceiling Fans have four or five blades that generally measure 36, 42, and 52 inches in diameter. When used in full speed, a 52-inch ceiling fan that has a 12- to 15-degree blade pitch can operate at a speed between 180 to 220 RPM (revolutions per minute). The switch for this kind of ceiling fan is normally suspended from the center of the motor that can control speed, reverse the fan, and turn on a light kit if there is any.
Industrial-style Ceiling Fans
Standard Industrial-style Ceiling Fans are composed of three metal blades that produce higher maximum speed rotations which range from 250 to 300 RPM. Because they operate in high speed and their blades are sharper than household-style ceiling fan, Industrial-style Ceiling Fans should be mounted on a higher distance from the floor. They usually measure 48 to 60 inches in diameter. Unlike Household-style Ceiling Fans, their speed controls are mounted on the wall.

Room size and fan size. Choose a ceiling fan that fits in the room where you will be putting it. Make sure that the distance from the floor to the ceiling is suitable to the kind of fan you will purchase. Also consider the square footage. The wrong ceiling fan size will either cause the room to be too ‘windy’ or still to hot. Worse, the wrong fan size may cause structural damage. Also, be realistic. If the room does not have proper ventilation, even a big ceiling fan cannot bring the temperature down.
Number of blades. It is a common misconception that ceiling fans with more blades can circulate more air. Be wise – a ceiling fan with three to four blades produces the same results as one with six blades. |
