Guide to Portable Fans

Portable Fan : What is it?

PortableFans1

Portable fans circulate air around a room to provide cooling and comfort. They consist of three or more blades rotating around a central axle, usually contained in a mesh or grill case. The blades range from four to 20 inches long, making them easier to transport but less powerful than stationary fans. They are commonly used in homes and offices. In large buildings, they are often used to supplement air conditioning.

Kinds of Portable Fans include the following:

Personal fans

  • Personal fans have blades measuring four to seven inches.
  • They may be placed on floors, tables, desks, or countertops.
  • They are very light and compact, allowing easy transport and storage.

Stand fans

  • Stand fans, also called pedestal fans, have blades ranging from 12 to 19 inches.
  • They are designed to sit on the floor with wide, stable bases and long stands.
  • The stand can usually be adjusted at different heights.
  • They are ideal for ventilating large rooms and outdoor areas.

Commercial fans

  • Commercial fans have large, powerful blades that circulate large amounts of air.
  • They are designed for large areas such as garages, factories, and warehouses.

Barrel fans

  • Barrel fans remove dust, fumes, and other contaminants from an area.
  • They can also be used for speed drying to remove odors from damp, enclosed spaces.
  • They are usually designed for industrial use, such as in workshops or factories.

Floor fans

  • Floor fans are about the size of personal fans, but are designed to sit on the floor.
  • They usually have tilt heads and plastic or metal grills.
  • They offer great versatility and are ideal for home basements and living rooms.

Window fans

  • They have reversible motors and blades that draw in fresh outdoor air and blow out stale air.

Box fans

  • Box fans have lightweight square bodies that may be placed on floors or desks.
  • They are easy to move from room to room and are ideal for general home cooling.

Choosing Portable Fans (Buying Tips)

Noise: Choose a portable fan that operates quietly. Large industrial units may be noisier than smaller models, but the noise should not be louder than a soft buzz. Look for one with a small motor and plastic grills to minimize noise.

Blades:
Look for a portable fan with scooped or angled blades for better air circulation. Scooped blades carry more air per stroke and provide better cooling for large rooms.

Speed settings:
Choose a portable fan with three or more speed settings to suit different cooling needs. A basic home fan should have a high, low, and medium speed option.
