Great little fan! - Lincoln 6 Echo, Jan 25, 2008

First of all, let me tell you why I ordered this fan.

Back in June of 2007, I upgraded to an HDTV and HD SAT DVR receiver. The SAT receiver ran hotter than I expected, and I decided that I needed a cooling fan to blow across the air vents. My surround sound receiver also ran hot, so I'm killing two birds with one fan here, so-to-speak. So I found an old small 12" box fan that was somewhat effective, but not extremely effective as it didn't push all that much air, even at its high setting.

Well, within the last month or so, this old bax fan started to make some occassional frame vibration or motor grinding noises. And within the past week or so, it just kept getting worse and worse, but not consistant. Anyway, I've been eyeing one of this Duracraft fans for sometime as we've got a similar one at work and I was amazed at how much air these little thing pushed due to the vortex chamber and grill construction.

So due to my box fan's looming problems, I decided to go ahead and order one. Well, I ordered it on the Thursday before Martin Luthor King Day, it was shipped via DHL on Sunday. My old fan actually konked out on MLK Day itself, and my new fan arrived on Tuesday. Talk about timing!!!

Anyway...so how does this fan perform? Pretty good actually. It's got a weird motor mechanism in which if there's an obstruction in front of the front grill, the motor revs up and increases RPMs. Not sure why this does this as most fans do this if there's an obstruction in the back where the air intake is.

Because my A/V equipment had been running without a cooling fan for a day, it was getting pretty hot back in my cabinet, and setting the fan on "Low" wasn't getting the job done and it put that strain on the motor like I mentioned above. So I put it on "High" for a while.

But later, I noticed that after day, things had cooled down in there, so I turned the fan down to "Low" and noticed that it didn't strain like it did and it was putting out enough cool air that leaving it on "Low" was adequate. It's a good thing too, as on "High" the fan is a bit loud. On "Low" it's hardly noticeable, if at all. Again, it was loud on "High" because of that quirky variable motor speed thing. Because I noticed that once things cooled down in there, turning it back on "High" wasn't as loud as it was before. This loudness is the only reason why I deducted a star in my rating.

Anyway, the most important thing about this fan in the Vortex construction in the extraordinary depth of the inner chamber and fan angle and the spiraled mesh grill. Fans made this way push a lot more air than fans made the old way. That is with rectangular mesh grills and narrow inner chambers.
