Sometimes the wheel needs to be reinvented, and the side-operation can opener, like this Good Grips Smooth Edge model from Oxo, is a case in point. Designed to operate on the horizontal, the opener makes a smooth cut below the can edge. The lid doesn't fall into the can, and the opener makes minimal contact with can contents. Built-in lid pliers let you grip the lid without touching it for clean and efficient removal. Though the large handles may be unwieldy for small hands, Oxo does use soft, nonslip material for a more comfortable grip. Love this can opener. Very easy to use. I guess others have mentioned that it might appear at first that the opener hasn't worked properly, but it probably has done its job perfectly. I'm not sure why, but most of the time the lid doesn't come off all the way until you grip the edge of the lid with the handy little pinchers and pull up. The lid will pop right off.

It may take a while to get the hang of this opener but once you do, it is great! No more cuting my fingers.

Nearly Dead After Just a Year - vobsister, May 01, 2008

I was very pleased with this can opener when I got it, but after just a year, its performance has become hit or miss, sometimes not opening the can at all. Fortunately, I still have my good old traditional can opener, which has worked perfectly fine for at least 25 years--the exact same one--and still works fine.

We have owned this can opener for 3 years, and it USED to work like a charm. We specifically purchased it because we did not want any metal contaminates from the can in our food, particularly because we have a toddler. The issue is that for the past 4 months it has just gone bad. It's extremely hard to open can goods. It takes about 15 turns for it to semi open the can, and then it has to be pried open.

I don't believe I will ever own a different can opener than this one. It is so easy to use and doesn't take up valuable counter space. Get it, you won't be sorry.
