Guide to Apatites

Apatite : What is it?

Apatite1

Apatite stones are phosphate minerals with high concentrations of hydroxyl, fluorine, or chlorine ions in their crystals. They are among the few minerals produced from biological micro-environmental systems used for chemical applications. In some parts of the United States, apatite stones are used to fertilize tobacco, giving American cigarettes a new and different taste from those made by other countries.

Kinds of Apatites include the following:

Hydroxylapatites

  • Hydroxylapatites are the most common types of apatites.
  • They are the major components of enamels in the teeth. They also make up the solid structure of the bones in the body.
  • They are often added to orange juice labeled with "fortified with calcium."

Fluorapatites

  • Fluorapatites are harder than hyroxylapatites.
  • They are also essential components of the teeth. Fluoridated toothpaste is required to maintain their apatite structures.
  • They provide excellent resistance to acid attacks.
  • Excessive amounts in the body can result to dental or skeletal fluorosis.

Chlorapatites

  • Chlorapatites are the least common types of apatites.
  • They are not found to be essential components in the body system.
  • They can bind several toxic metals to form stable mineral structures.
  • They can resist leaching even with centuries of use when combined with other minerals.
