Black Coral : What is it?
| Black coral (Antipathes Grandis) is a tree-like, deep water, tropical coral related to the sea anemone. It is a living water creature collected mostly from the Caribbean and Pacific waters. It takes its name from its black or dark brown skeleton made of tough protein. Its skeleton is covered with brilliantly colored living tissues and tiny spines. It usually comes in orange, green, and yellow.
Black coral is popularly used in jewelry-making, but many nations have stopped, banned, or regulated their harvesting and use, as they considered to be endangered. In fact, they are listed in the Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. |
