Cabochon is a gemstone that is shaped and polished instead of faceted. It has a domed top and a flat back. Cabochon also refers to any cut that does not involve faceting.
Cabochon is usually applied to opaque gems with a hardness not lower than 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. It cannot be applied to translucent gems because they are not ideal for polishing that scratches and dulls their surface. The cabochon cut is commonly applied to asteriated stones like star sapphires and chatoyant stones to show the stars of their eyes, which would not be seen using a faceted cut.
Smoothness: Choose a cabochon cut gemstone that is uniformly smooth all over with no indentations or scratches.
Symmetry: Look for a symmetrical cabochon cut gemstone. When cut in half, the left and right side of the gemstone should have identical or symmetrical shapes.
