Claddagh Ring : What is it?
| Claddagh rings are made with a distinctive design featuring a crown over a heart clasped by two hands. The heart symbolizes love; the hands, friendship; and the crown, loyalty. They are mostly worn by women in a variety of ways to signify their relationship or romantic state. They are popularly given as heirlooms and wedding rings.
This design originated in Claddagh, an Irish village outside Galway City. Originally a Fisher Kings symbol of the village, it was made into a ring design in Mary II’s reign in the 17th century. |
