Kinds of Diamond Engagement Rings include the following:

Step cuts

  • Step cuts involve simple incisions into the stone that create a series of steps along the surface.
  • A popular shape for engagement rings created with step cuts, is the emerald, which is rectangular in shape.
  • Stones that are cut in this method do not sparkle as much as the other stone shapes, but the elongated surface of an emerald for example, presents a regal appearance.
  • They are reminiscent of antique and vintage rings.

Brilliant cut

  • The brilliant cut maximizes the facets of the stone to create the brightest diamond fire.
  • The stone is cut at the most ideal angles that create internal refraction.
  • The most common brilliant cut for engagement ring is the classic round.

Mixed cut

  • Mixed cut combines both step cuts and brilliant cuts.
  • Step cuts are easier to create but flaws are more visible.
  • Brilliant cuts increase the stone's sparkle and diminished the appearance of such flaws.
  • Some mixed cuts may include princess, heart, or trillium.

Choosing Diamond Engagement Rings (Buying Tips)

Return policy:  Choose a diamond engagement ring that has a return policy.  You never know if you change your mind later about the style of the ring, about the woman, or God forbid, if she says no.

Certification:  Look for a diamond engagement ring that is certified in all the 4 C's: cut, clarity, carat, and color.  Certificates are issued by  the International Gemological Institute (IGI), the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS), the European Gemological Laboratories (EGL), and GemEx Systems.
