Guide to Diamond Rings

Diamond Ring : What is it?

DiamondRings1

Diamond ring is a special type of jewelry worn on the finger, and has a diamond stone set in precious metal.  The diamond ring is usually worn only on special occasions or given to someone special to signify an event, such as an engagement, a wedding, a birthday, or an anniversary, among other things.  The diamond ring represents eternity, solidarity, or a promise, thus ideally, the stone should be genuine.  Because of the beauty  and wonder that the diamond ring gives, there are plenty of fancy or imitation diamond rings available in the market, at a cost that is a lot more affordable. Still, the beauty of real diamonds set in a precious metal is unmatched.  The diamond ring comes in different cuts, shapes, sizes, weights, and styles.

Kinds of Diamond Rings include the following:

Round

  • The round cut is the most popular diamond shape, because it is the cut that maximizes the diamond's brilliance.
  • It is called the “Ideal Cut,” referring to cutting the diamond into the best proportions to achieve maximum brilliance.

Asscher

  • Asscher is a fancy diamond shape that is normally less expensive than round.
  • It is a squarish step cut with an almost octagonal outline that enhances the fire of the stone.
  • The “Shape Appeal” of the asscher cut is what attracts most people to it.

Cushion cut

  • Also known as “pillow cut” or “candlelight,” the cushion cut is an antique style that has rounded corners and larger facets.
  • Its shape can vary from square to rectangle.

Emerald cut

  • The emerald cut is rectangular in shape with cut corners.
  • It is a form of step cut, as opposed to a brilliant cut.
  • It has broad facets with flat planes, like the steps of a stair.

Heart-shaped

  • The heart-shaped cut is similar to the pear-shape, except that it has a cleft at the top.
  • It can be cut as brilliant or a combination of brilliant and step cut.

Marquise

  • The marquise contains 56 facets, and is supposedly polished in the shape of the mouth of the Marquise Pompadour, according to a legend.

Oval-shaped
  • The oval is similar to a round cut but is elliptical.
  • It usually has 56 facets.

Pear

  • The pear shape is a combination of a marquise and round cut.
  • It also has a teardrop shape.

Princess

  • The princess is rectangular like the emerald cut, but has more sparkle like the round cut.

Radiant

  • The radiant cut is known for its cut corners, and has 70 facets.
  • It has the elegance of an emerald cut and the brilliance of a round cut.

Choosing Diamond Rings (Buying Tips)

Cut:  Look for a diamond ring with a cut in a way that it catches light and sends sparkles that radiate in a room. Cut can also be the shape of the diamond, and this is largely a matter of preference.

Clarity: Look for a diamond ring with the least number of inclusions.

Color:  Usually the colorless diamonds are the most valuable and most preferred.
