Guide to Fire Opals

Fire Opal : What is it?

FireOpal1

Fire opal is an amorphous mineraloid with a red and orange base. It is translucent to semi-opaque and displays pleochroism at certain angles.

Fire opal was a symbol of fervent love among the ancient people of Central America. They called it the “stone of the bird of paradise” because they believed that a gem with such life, fiery color, and vigor can only be created in the water of paradise.  The Aztecs and Mayans used fire opal in mosaics and rituals.
