Imperial topaz, also called golden topaz, is a topaz variety characterized by a vivid red-orange or orange-pink color. It is the second most common variety of topaz. It is usually heated to bring out its rosy-red pink hue. It is revered by some as a “Gemstone of Fire” that burns with the energy of the sun.
They have been known as imperial topaz ever since these orange-pink gems were found to adorn the jewelry of the Czarinas at the height of the Imperial Russian power. Today, it remains to be one of the most sought after topaz varieties. It is the accepted gift for 23rd wedding anniversaries.
Natural imperial topaz usually occurs in the cavities of granite and rhyolites, pegmatite dikes, and in high-temperature veins with tourmaline and cassiterite.
It is transparent with a vitreous luster.
