Guide to Opals

| Opal is a mineraloid gel with an amorphous chemical composition (hydrated silicon dioxide). It has a 3% to 10% water content that can go as high as 20%. Its color ranges from colorless to white, gray, yellow, green, milky blue, red, brown, and black. It is deposited at low temperatures and occurs in the fissures of most rocks including sandstone, limonte, basalt, and rhyolite.
