Mystic Topazo : What is it?
| Mystic topaz is a treated or enhanced variety of topaz. It is made to produce stunning colors mostly blue, green, red, pink, and yellow. It is not found naturally; it is created by coating natural colorless topaz with a thin layer of titanium or a similar metal before being treated by heat and pressure. The coating, which is only a micron thin, is applied to the stone's underside angled portion. It interferes with the stone’s natural refraction, thus creating the rainbow colors. The production of mystic topaz is protected by strict patents, making its availability limited in the general market. Mystic topaz should be cared for to protect its coating from sharp blows and high activity. It should only be cleaned with the cleaners used for pearls and opals, although a solution of mild soap and water is acceptable. It should not be cleaned with abrasive brushes and cloths, as doing so can damage its clarity and color. |
