Nipple Shield : What is it?
| Nipple shields, also known as nipple covers or breast petals, are worn over the nipples (using suction, adhesion, or friction) during breastfeeding. They prevent the nipples from becoming sore and also help babies suck properly. Some women also use nipple shields to fully cover the nipples and partially cover the areolas so that they don’t show under thin clothing. Other variants of nipple shields (usually metal) are designed to do the opposite—they lift and accentuate the nipples and their piercings, if any. |

Kinds of nipple shields include the following: |
Silicone nipple shields Silicone nipple shields are made of thin, flexible silicone. They are designed to cover the nipple and areola of breastfeeding mothers, forcing the baby to suck on them instead of the nipple. They prevent nipples from becoming sore. Silicone nipple shields are ideal for mothers with flat or inverted nipples. Some models are made thin to allow more skin-to-skin contact. Rubber nipple shields Rubber nipple shields are made of thin, elastic rubber. They look like the nipples in breastfeeding bottles, only larger. They are also used to prevent nipples from becoming sore when breastfeeding. However, rubber nipple shields are not very comfortable to use. Metal nipple shields Metal nipple shields are made of thin, solid metal. They accentuate the nipples and the areola. They are available in different designs. Some designs cover the nipples, while others expose them. |
