| Stud earrings are designed to look like dots or small marks on the ear. - These stud earrings have four prongs bent over the jewel to keep it in place.

Martini-set earrings
- These stud earrings are set onto tapered mounts with three or four prongs.

Metal mounts: Choose stud earrings with a lightweight metal mount that matches the color of the jewel. Lighter colored jewels should be set on white gold or similar colored mounts to better bring out their color, and yellow shades are best used with yellow gold mounts to make them appear lighter.
Locks: Choose stud earrings with post-and-clutch backs for a more secure hold. Avoid butterfly or push back locks because they can snag and drop easily. Screw backs are more secure, but they are harder to put on and can be hard to remove when not properly screwed.
