Guide to Stud Earrings

Stud Earring : What is it?

studearrings1

Stud earrings are designed to look like dots or small marks on the ear. They are usually pierced instead of clipped on, so that there are no visible connecting parts and the stud appears to float on the earlobe. They consist of a single set jewel, such as diamonds or pearls, or a piece of shaped gold or silver. Stud earrings are considered one of the simplest yet most elegant earring styles available.

Kinds of Stud Earrings include the following:

Three-prong basket mounts

  • These stud earrings have three bent prongs securing the jewel from the top.
  • They give jewels a smooth and rounder appearance, making them ideal for elliptical or irregular cuts.
  • The prongs are less visible, allowing the jewel’s surface to reflect more light.

Four-prong basket mounts

  • These stud earrings have four prongs bent over the jewel to keep it in place.
  • They hold the jewel more securely, but are more visible from the surface.
  • They make jewels appear square or angled and are commonly used for round cuts, princess cuts, and other fancy shapes.

Martini-set earrings

  • These stud earrings are set onto tapered mounts with three or four prongs.
  • They are lighter and more delicate than basket mounts.
  • They hold the jewel closer to the ear, making them more secure and comfortable.

Choosing Stud Earrings (Buying Tips)

Metal mounts: Choose stud earrings with a lightweight metal mount that matches the color of the jewel. Lighter colored jewels should be set on white gold or similar colored mounts to better bring out their color, and yellow shades are best used with yellow gold mounts to make them appear lighter.

Locks: Choose stud earrings with post-and-clutch backs for a more secure hold. Avoid butterfly or push back locks because they can snag and drop easily. Screw backs are more secure, but they are harder to put on and can be hard to remove when not properly screwed.
