Rice Cooker : What is it?
| Rice cookers are used to prepare steamed rice and keep them warm after cooking. They consist of an insulated case containing a removable cooking pot. A heating element is located between the two containers, usually controlled by a thermostat. The cooking pot is usually calibrated to ensure proper proportions of rice and water.
In most rice cookers, the rice and water are poured in at the start of cooking. The heater then brings the water to boiling point, during which the rice absorbs the water and expands. After the preset time, the rest of the water is boiled away and the machine either shuts off or switches to “keep warm” mode. Some models allow users to add flavorings before or during the cooking process. |

Kinds of Rice Cookers include the following: |
Basic (on/off) rice cookers
- Cook and turn off rice cookers
- These rice cookers automatically shut off after the rice is cooked.
- They have no indicator lights, and the pans are usually regular aluminum rather than non-stick.
- They are cheaper than other types, but usually have fewer features.
Cook And Keep Warm rice cookers
- These rice cookers switch to lower temperatures after cooking to keep the food warm.
- They usually include steamer baskets for cooking other foods along with the rice.
- Some models have timers that maintain warm temperatures for up to 12 hours.
- They can be turned off by unplugging them from the socket.
Fuzzy logic rice cookers
Basic fuzzy logic rice cookers
- These rice cookers have settings for other rice recipes like porridge, sushi, and brown rice.
- They can also be set to cook different rice textures, such as hard and soft rice.
- They also have keep warm modes, automatic timers, and usually larger steamer baskets.
Induction Heating rice cookers
- Induction rice cookers have heating coils that conduct heat from the bottom of the pot upwards.
- They provide more even cooking and may even compensate for measuring errors.
- They are also more efficient, because most of the power is used for cooking instead of generating heat.

Material: Choose a rice cooker with a non-stick or Teflon-coated pan for easier cleaning and maintenance. Make sure the coating is not easily scratched or scrubbed off. Note that aluminum, copper, and stainless steel pots are not suitable for induction cookers. For the lid, look for a clear glass one to help you monitor cooking.
Indicator lights: Choose a rice cooker with indicator lights that tell when the cooker is on, what mode it is in, and when there are errors in operation. Make sure the lights are clearly labeled.
Safety features: Make sure the rice cooker has a fuse protector to prevent fires, especially if you want to keep it on for long periods. Also look for an auto cord reel, which retracts the cord when not in use to prevent tripping. |
