Samplers record sound clips from musical instruments and Alto flutes are woodwind instruments known for their quiet, husky sound. They are tuned in the key of G, one-fourth of an octave below the concert flute. Their range starts at G3, just below the middle C, and peaks at C#7. Music for alto flutes is usually in the treble clef, with th highest notes written four ledger lines above the staff.
Straight Alto Flutes are perfectly level from the head joint to the foot. The finger keys are evenly spaced in a line on one side of the flute. They have more consistent timbre than Curved Alto Flutes.
Curved Alto Flutes have curved head joints, forming a J-figure with the straight foot and body joints. They are used by players who have trouble reaching the lower finger keys. Some head joints are sharply bent so that they are at right angles to the rest of the flute, allowing the flute to be played upright.
Material: Choose a brass alto flute for a louder sound and clearer tones, especially for performing with an ensemble. Gold and silver models also work well, but may be too expensive for beginners. Wooden alto flutes have a warmer sound that may appeal to some people, but they have limited volume and may lose quality when amplified.
Finger keys: Choose an alto flute with evenly spaced finger keys that you can span with one hand. Make sure you can reach both ends without shifting your arm. Those with bent head joints are ideal for beginners because the finger keys are easily accessible while playing.
