The bass clarinet is a transposing instrument pitched in B flat. It has a straight body; a small, upturned silver metal bell; and a curved metal neck. Since it is heavy, it is usually supported by an adjustable peg attached to the instrument or by a neck strap.
The bass clarinet plays a note an octave above the contrabass clarinet. It can also play in the key of C and A. It is used in scoring for symphony orchestras, wind bands, clarinet choirs, film scoring, and jazz solos.
