A bassoon is a woodwind instrument made up of a reed, a crook or bocal, a tenor or wing joint, a butt or boot, a bass or long joint, and a bell. It is traditionally made of maple wood, but modern bassoons are usually made of ebonite or polypropylene which is ideal for amateurs and students. Bassoons are commonly used in symphony orchestras, wind ensembles, and jazz bands. It is also called the French basson, the Italian fagotto, and the German fagott.
The body of a plastic bassoon is made of durable polypropylene. Its keys are made of nickel silver and plated in nickel and its spring posts are secured by screws set in epoxy. The D hole is closed with a plateau key to reduce finger stretching.
A wood bassoon has a body constructed of genuine maple wood. It is tuned to a high D pitch and has silver-plated keys. Accessories include a neck strap, two reeds, a crutch, a seat strap, and several drop swabs.
Metal tubes: Choose a bassoon built with metal tubes long enough to reach the wing joint’s finger holes to protect the tone holes from getting clogged with water. Linings: To prevent your wood bassoon from cracking, choose one made with boot and wing joint synthetic linings.
Care kits: When buying a bassoon, make sure you purchase a quality care kit along with it. The kit has a polishing cloth, cleaner duster, key oil, cork grease, and swabs used for cleaning, polishing, and maintain your instrument. Be sure to read the instruction manual to know the proper oiling and cleaning techniques.
